Rail & Road Auctions is proud to present Part One of the automotive collection of the late James “Jim” Moloney—a nationally recognized authority on classic American automobiles. Jim began his career at Chevrolet’s Los Angeles Zone Office before dedicating his life to education, where he became a beloved teacher and mentor. Beyond the classroom, he was a prolific automotive historian and author of ten books, including Bowties of the Fifties, Chevrolet Chevelle & Monte Carlo 1964–1972, and Studebaker Cars. This auction offers a compelling cross-section of Jim’s passion for the American car hobby. Featured are dozens of high-quality die-cast models in 1:18, 1:24 and 1:12 scale, with deep representation from Franklin Mint, Danbury Mint, Sun Star, American Muscle, and Highway 61. The collection is particularly rich in Chevrolet, Ford, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile examples, reflecting Jim’s lifelong fascination with Detroit’s golden age. Highlights include Lot 3135, a group of five American Muscle 1:18 1950 Oldsmobiles, and Lot 3160, a trio of Sun Star Pontiacs and Buicks from the 1950s. These and many others come from what Jim fondly called his “Poor Man’s Harrah’s”—a sixteen-stall garage once filled with classic cars and automobilia. Whether you’re a longtime collector or a first-time bidder, this catalog offers an opportunity to acquire pieces from a thoughtfully assembled and celebrated collection. We are honored to help pass Jim’s legacy on to the next generation of caretakers.
